Hotshot, box truck and expedite operators are often newer businesses with income that is hard to predict. That makes the Marketplace estimate tricky and the network question unavoidable. Here is how to handle both.
If you run a pickup and gooseneck, a box truck or a cargo van under your own authority or leased to an expedite carrier, you buy your own health coverage. Estimate your 2027 net income carefully, because the credit is settled on your tax return with no repayment cap starting with tax year 2026. If you are healthy and over the line, a private nationwide PPO plan is worth comparing.
Expedite and hotshot work tends to be on-demand and long-distance, which is the worst case for a plan built around one metro. A load from Houston to Columbus to Charlotte in one week is normal, and so is sitting on a dock in a state where your plan has no doctors.
If your truck or truck-and-trailer combination is rated at 10,001 pounds or more and you haul across state lines, FMCSA rules require a DOT medical certificate, just like the big trucks. That exam is not covered by most health plans, but the conditions it flags are.
The Marketplace asks for your expected income for the coming year. For a new authority, that is a guess, and the guess matters:
If your first year looks lean, a subsidized Marketplace plan may be the right start, with a move to a private plan once the business is clearly over the line.
Hotshot and expedite operators skew younger than the long-haul average, and younger, healthy applicants are exactly who private underwritten plans price best. Once your net is clearly over the line, compare one. Because these plans can be applied for any month, you do not have to wait for open enrollment to switch when the business takes off.
Hotshot drivers serving the oilfield often work rotations far from home and see income rise and fall with rig counts. Plan for the swing: a policy you can keep through a slow quarter matters more than the lowest possible premium in a strong one. See also oilfield contractor coverage.
Self-employed and 1099 income is counted after expenses. Our free calculator shows which side of the 400% line you land on in about a minute, with results right away and no sign-up.
If the truck or combination is rated at 10,001 pounds or more and you operate in interstate commerce, FMCSA requires a medical examiner's certificate. Check your setup against the FMCSA rules.
Estimate next year's net profit after business expenses, subtract half of self-employment tax and any deductible retirement contributions, and add other household income. Keep notes on how you built the estimate and update it if income changes during the year.
Yes. Private underwritten plans can be applied for any month if you qualify medically. Keep your Marketplace plan until the new policy is approved, then end the old one and report the change.
