The rig count moves. Your coverage should not.

Oilfield consultants, company men and independent field contractors often work rotations far from home on 1099 day rates. Work rises and falls with prices. Here is coverage that holds up through both.

Rotations, day rates and a home somewhere else

Quick answer

Oilfield consultants and contractors paid on 1099 day rates buy their own coverage, and many live in one state while working rotations in another. A plan has to work in both places. Healthy contractors with strong day rates should price a private plan on a nationwide PPO network next to full-price Marketplace coverage; contractors in a downturn should check whether lower income brings a Marketplace credit back.

W-2 hands employed by large service companies usually have employer plans. This page is for consultants, independent contractors and small operators who do not.

Man camps, long drives and emergency transport

Working a rotation in a man camp or an RV does not change your home state; you still buy coverage where you live. What changes is distance. In much of the Permian and the Bakken, the nearest hospital can be an hour or more from location, and a serious injury may mean a helicopter.

  • Know the nearest in-network emergency room and urgent care for each location before the rotation starts.
  • Ask how the plan handles ambulance and air ambulance transport. Federal surprise-billing protections for air ambulances apply to ACA-compliant plans; private plans have their own terms, which we read with you.
  • For 1099 consultants, lodging and travel away from your tax home are business expenses that lower net income before the Marketplace sees it.

Plan for the downturn in the good years

  • In a strong year, you may be well over the line. Retirement contributions lower MAGI and build a cushion for slow years.
  • In a slow year, lower income may qualify you for a Marketplace credit. Update your estimate when work dries up.
  • Through both, a private plan priced on your health rather than your income keeps the same price.
The plain truth about private plans: the nationwide PPO plans we quote are private, medically underwritten plans, not Marketplace plans. A nationwide network means in-network doctors and hospitals in many states; it does not mean every service is covered. You answer health questions, and the carrier can decline you or exclude a condition. These plans are not ACA-compliant: depending on the plan, prescriptions, maternity, mental health and other benefits can be limited or left out, some benefits have dollar maximums, and out-of-network care costs more. We walk through exactly what a plan pays before you apply, and if a Marketplace plan fits you better, we tell you that too.

Questions we hear most

Do oilfield consultants get health insurance?

Consultants paid on 1099 day rates usually buy their own coverage. W-2 employees of service companies are usually offered employer plans.

Will my plan work where I work rotations?

On Marketplace and other ACA-compliant plans, emergencies are covered anywhere. For routine care, check whether the plan's network includes providers near your rotation as well as near home.

Should I change plans when oil prices drop?

If your income falls under the 2027 line, a Marketplace credit may be available at the next open enrollment or with a qualifying event. Report income changes if you already have a Marketplace plan.
