For 2027 the tax credit ends at the 400% line, with no phase-out. Before you pay full Marketplace price, check whether you are really over it, then compare what a healthy driver can get on a private nationwide PPO plan.
For 2027 coverage there is no premium tax credit above 400% of the poverty line: $63,840 single, $86,560 for two, $132,000 for four. If you are truly over it and healthy, a private medically underwritten plan on a nationwide PPO network can cost less than full-price Marketplace coverage, though it covers less in some areas, so compare benefits as well as price. If you are close, deductible retirement contributions may put you back under.
The enhanced credits of 2021 through 2025 hid the cliff by capping the benchmark premium at 8.5% of income even above the 400% line. They expired, and for 2027 the old rule applies: under the line, the credit caps what you pay for the benchmark silver plan at no more than 10.22% of income; over it, you pay the full sticker price, whatever that is at your age and ZIP.
Drivers tend to look at settlements and assume the worst. The Marketplace looks at modified adjusted gross income, and for a trucking business a lot comes off first:
The calculator's self-employed mode runs this math in a minute. If you are within a few thousand dollars of the line, a conversation with your tax preparer before December can be worth more than any plan comparison.
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Full-price Marketplace plan | Drivers with a health condition or daily medications. Guaranteed issue during open enrollment. | Sticker price, and in many states no PPO network at all. |
| Private plan on a nationwide PPO network | Healthy drivers who run multiple states. Apply any month. | Health questions, possible declines or exclusions, and benefit limits you need to read. |
| HSA-eligible plan | Drivers who rarely use care and want a tax-deductible account. | A high deductible before most coverage starts. |
If you have at least one W-2 employee who is not your spouse, a small group plan or an ICHRA becomes possible too. A business made up of only the owner, or the owner and spouse, does not qualify for small group coverage. See small fleet coverage.
Paying full price stings less when the premium comes off your taxes. Self-employed drivers can generally take the self-employed health insurance deduction, figured on Form 7206, for premiums covering themselves, a spouse and dependents. Three limits trip people up:
This is general information, not tax advice, and your preparer has the final word.
You send a short form from the cab when you are parked. One broker calls you once, at a time that works with your hours, and asks the health questions on the phone, never online. Then you get two numbers side by side: the Marketplace price at your home ZIP with any credit applied, and, if you are healthy enough to qualify, the private nationwide PPO options. If the Marketplace wins, we say so and help you enroll there.
Never cancel coverage you have until a new policy is approved and issued in writing.

400% of the federal poverty line, based on modified adjusted gross income: $63,840 for one person, $86,560 for two and $132,000 for a family of four in the 48 contiguous states.
Net. It starts from Schedule C net profit after truck expenses, then subtracts above-the-line deductions such as half of self-employment tax and deductible retirement contributions.
They can be for healthy drivers over the subsidy line, because they are priced on health as well as age and ZIP. They are usually not the better deal if you qualify for a meaningful credit or have a condition that underwriting would exclude.
Yes. Medically underwritten private plans can be applied for any month, which is why they matter most after January 15, when the Marketplace is closed to anyone without a qualifying life event.
It depends on the plan and on underwriting, and some private plans limit outpatient prescription benefits. If you take daily medications, a Marketplace plan is often the safer choice, and we will tell you that on the call.
