Most carriers require leased owner-operators to carry occupational accident coverage. It is a good product for what it does, and it leaves the biggest risks uncovered. Here is the line between the two.
Occupational accident insurance pays benefits when you are hurt on the job, usually medical bills up to a limit, a weekly disability benefit and a death or dismemberment benefit. It is the owner-operator's stand-in for workers' compensation. It does not cover illness, your spouse or kids, or an injury on your own time, and it is not health insurance under the ACA.
| Situation | Occupational accident | Health insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Hurt while loading or securing freight | Yes, within policy limits | Depends on the plan; some exclude work injuries covered elsewhere |
| Heart attack or stroke at a truck stop | Usually no, illness is not an accident | Yes |
| Diabetes, blood pressure or sleep apnea care | No | Yes, subject to plan terms |
| Hurt at home on a weekend | No | Yes |
| Spouse or kids need care | No | Yes, if they are on the plan |
| Lost income while injured on the job | Often, a weekly benefit | No, that is disability insurance |
The goal is no gaps and no double payment for the same risk:

It is not a federal requirement, but many carriers require leased owner-operators to carry it, or a workers' compensation policy, as a condition of the lease.
