Your coverage window opens when the company plan ends

Quick answer

Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event. You can pick a Marketplace plan up to 60 days before the company plan ends and up to 60 days after. Pick it before the old plan ends and the new one can start the first of the next month, with no gap. You can also take COBRA, or, if you are healthy, apply for a private nationwide PPO plan any month.

The mistake we see most is a driver who leases on, gets busy, and notices on day 75 that the window closed. Without a qualifying event, the next chance at a Marketplace plan is open enrollment, which starts November 1 for January coverage.

A clean timeline from your last company load

  1. Get the exact end date of the company plan. Many plans run through the end of the month you leave; some end on your last day. HR or the benefits portal will tell you.
  2. Estimate your first-year net. Lease-on settlement sheets and your truck payment are enough for a reasonable number. That number decides whether a tax credit is in play.
  3. Compare three lanes, about 30 days out. COBRA, a Marketplace plan, and if you are healthy, a private plan on a nationwide PPO network.
  4. Apply before the company plan ends. For the Marketplace, report the loss of coverage and pick a plan so it starts the first of the next month. For a private plan, apply early enough to have the approval in hand.
  5. Do not drop anything until the new policy is approved in writing. COBRA can be elected for 60 days after you get the notice and is retroactive, which makes it a useful safety net while a private application is underwritten.

COBRA: the expensive safety net

If your carrier has 20 or more employees, federal COBRA usually lets you keep the same plan for up to 18 months. You pay the whole premium plus up to a 2% fee, which is typically several times what you paid as an employee. It makes sense when you are in the middle of treatment with doctors you cannot change, or as a short bridge. Most new owner-operators find a better price elsewhere.

One trap: once you elect COBRA, voluntarily dropping it mid-year is not a qualifying event for a Marketplace plan. Decide during the 60-day window, not after.

What your lease covers, and what it does not

Carriers that lease owner-operators often require occupational accident coverage and may offer it through a program deduction from your settlements. That covers on-the-job injuries. It does not cover getting sick, your family, or an injury on your home time, so it is not a substitute for health insurance. See occupational accident vs health insurance.

Some lease programs also advertise discounted health or benefit packages. Read them closely: many are accident, dental and discount cards rather than major medical coverage. We are glad to look one over for you.

The plain truth about private plans: the nationwide PPO plans we quote are private, medically underwritten plans, not Marketplace plans. A nationwide network means in-network doctors and hospitals in many states; it does not mean every service is covered. You answer health questions, and the carrier can decline you or exclude a condition. These plans are not ACA-compliant: depending on the plan, prescriptions, maternity, mental health and other benefits can be limited or left out, some benefits have dollar maximums, and out-of-network care costs more. We walk through exactly what a plan pays before you apply, and if a Marketplace plan fits you better, we tell you that too.

Questions we hear most

How long do I have to get health insurance after leaving a trucking company?

You can pick a Marketplace plan up to 60 days before your job-based coverage ends and up to 60 days after. COBRA has its own 60-day election window after you receive the notice.

Is leasing on to a carrier a qualifying life event?

Losing your employer coverage is the qualifying event, not the lease itself. When the company plan ends, the 60-day special enrollment period starts.

Should I take COBRA when I become an owner-operator?

Usually only as a short bridge or if you are mid-treatment with doctors you need to keep. It costs the full premium plus a fee, and most drivers find better value on the Marketplace or a private plan.

Does occupational accident insurance count as health insurance?

No. It pays for work injuries under the terms of the policy. It does not cover illness, your family or off-duty injuries.
