The short version for Michigan drivers

Quick answer

Michigan drivers enroll on HealthCare.gov, and the Healthy Michigan Plan covers lower-income adults, so the bottom of the market is well served. Michigan drivers have a border most do not: the Ambassador Bridge and the Blue Water Bridge into Canada, where a U.S. individual plan's coverage is limited at best.

Auto parts, two bridges to Canada and the Upper Peninsula

The Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor is one of the busiest trade crossings on the continent, and the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron is another. Auto parts move on I-75 and I-94 around the clock, Grand Rapids and West Michigan add furniture and food freight, and the Upper Peninsula is a world of its own.

Drivers running into Ontario should know that most U.S. individual plans cover little or nothing in Canada beyond emergencies, and some not even that. If you cross often, ask about it before you buy.

Before you buy, search the plan's directory for the hospitals your family would use at home, such as Corewell Health, Henry Ford Health, University of Michigan Health and Trinity Health Michigan, and for urgent care along I-94, I-75, I-96, I-69 and I-196.

Healthy Michigan, strong metros and a thin U.P.

Several carriers compete in Southeast Michigan and West Michigan, while the Upper Peninsula has much more limited lineups. The Healthy Michigan Plan is a mature expansion program covering adults up to about 138% of the poverty line.

Above the 400% line, healthy Michigan drivers usually compare a private plan on a nationwide PPO network with full-price Marketplace coverage, especially those who spend most of the week in Ohio, Indiana and beyond.

About private plans: a nationwide network means in-network providers in many states, not that every service is covered. These plans are medically underwritten and not ACA-compliant: you answer health questions, a carrier can decline you or exclude a condition, and prescriptions and other benefits can be limited or capped.

Three things Michigan drivers should know

  • Cross-border drivers: ask exactly what a plan pays in Canada. Many U.S. individual plans pay nothing outside the U.S.
  • Upper Peninsula drivers should check which hospitals near home are in network; the lineup there is thin.
  • Michigan follows the HealthCare.gov calendar: December 15 for a January 1 start.
