Touring crew, AV techs, riggers and production staff work tour to tour, often on 1099s, in a different city every night. A home-county HMO is the wrong tool for that life. Here is the right one.
Crew who work enough union hours may earn health coverage through union benefit funds. Crew paid as 1099 contractors per tour or per show usually buy their own. Because the work is in a different city every night and stops between tours, the best plan is one you own, with a network that works nationally. Healthy crew should price a private plan on a nationwide PPO network next to full-price Marketplace coverage.
Tours end, get canceled and get extended. A plan tied to a tour contract ends with it, and so does the network. A plan you own does not.
Tour life confuses two things that insurance cares about. Your home state is where you live when you are not on tour, and that is where you buy coverage, even if you are gone 250 nights a year. Your tax home decides whether per diem and travel costs are deductible or tax-free; crew who give up their apartment and live entirely on the road can lose that treatment, which raises net income and can move you across the 2027 subsidy line.
Crew income can swing from a packed touring year to months off the road. If you use the Marketplace, estimate carefully and update when a tour is added or canceled; starting with tax year 2026 there is no cap on paying back excess credit. Private plans are priced on health, not income, so a healthy tech pays the same in a busy year and a quiet one.
Self-employed and 1099 income is counted after expenses. Our free calculator shows which side of the 400% line you land on in about a minute, with results right away and no sign-up.
Some earn it through union benefit funds based on hours. Many 1099 crew members buy their own.
On Marketplace and other ACA-compliant plans, emergencies are covered anywhere. For routine and urgent care in tour cities, you need a plan with a national network.
A plan tied to a tour or employer ends with it. A plan you own stays in force.
