If you freelance or run a business from a laptop and spend months in different cities, your health plan was probably chosen for a life you no longer live. Here is how to match coverage to how you actually move.
Self-employed remote workers buy health insurance in the state where they live, even if they spend months elsewhere. If you rotate between cities, a local HMO or EPO from your home state will cover emergencies everywhere but routine care only at home. Healthy remote workers should price a private plan on a nationwide PPO network next to full-price Marketplace coverage; those under the 2027 subsidy line or with conditions to cover usually do best on the Marketplace.
If you are a W-2 remote employee, your employer's plan comes first. Ask whether its network is national. If you are self-employed or a 1099 contractor, you are buying your own, and the self-employed health insurance deduction generally applies within its limits.
U.S. health plans are built for care in the U.S. Coverage outside the country is limited or absent for most plans, and Marketplace eligibility depends on living in the state. If you spend long stretches abroad, you will need international or travel medical coverage for that time, which is a separate product we do not sell. For the months you are stateside, the network questions on this page apply.

The state where they live and intend to stay, which is usually the state on their license and tax return. Plans are sold by state and service area.

For healthy remote workers who spend months in different cities, often yes, because it covers routine care where you are, not just emergencies.
