You go where the hail fell. Bring coverage that works there.

Roofing and restoration reps often work on commission as independent contractors, moving to whatever market the last storm hit. Big months, dry months and a home-state plan that does not travel. Here is a better setup.

Commission pay, contractor status, no benefits

Quick answer

Most storm restoration and roofing sales reps are paid on commission as 1099 contractors, so they buy their own health coverage. Reps who work storm markets in other states need a plan that covers routine and urgent care there, not just emergencies. Healthy reps with strong years should price a private plan on a nationwide PPO network next to full-price Marketplace coverage; reps in a lean year should check the Marketplace credit first.

Storm sales has a physical side: ladders, roofs, long days in the heat. Injuries on the job are a real risk, and as a contractor you are generally not covered by the company's workers' compensation. Health insurance is your first line, and disability insurance protects the commission income an injury would stop.

Read your rep agreement before storm season

Restoration companies set reps up in different ways: straight commission as a contractor, a draw against commission, or a W-2 base with commission on top. The structure decides whether the company offers coverage, so read the agreement. A W-2 role with an affordable employer plan usually blocks a Marketplace credit; a 1099 role leaves coverage entirely to you.

  • When you work a summer hail market in another state, you still buy coverage in your home state. That is why network reach matters.
  • Heat illness and ladder falls are the common injuries. Know where in-network urgent care is in each market.
  • Keep records of travel and lodging in storm markets; they are business expenses that lower your net income.

Big seasons, quiet seasons and the line

A strong storm year can put a rep well over the 2027 line; a dry one can put the same rep far under it. If you use the Marketplace, estimate your year honestly and update it when a big market breaks, because starting with tax year 2026 there is no cap on paying back excess credit. Private plans are not priced on income, so a healthy rep gets the same price in a big year and a slow one.

The plain truth about private plans: the nationwide PPO plans we quote are private, medically underwritten plans, not Marketplace plans. A nationwide network means in-network doctors and hospitals in many states; it does not mean every service is covered. You answer health questions, and the carrier can decline you or exclude a condition. These plans are not ACA-compliant: depending on the plan, prescriptions, maternity, mental health and other benefits can be limited or left out, some benefits have dollar maximums, and out-of-network care costs more. We walk through exactly what a plan pays before you apply, and if a Marketplace plan fits you better, we tell you that too.

Questions we hear most

Do roofing sales reps get health insurance from the company?

Usually not if they are 1099 contractors. Some companies hire W-2 reps with benefits, so check your agreement.

Will my health plan work in another state's storm market?

On Marketplace and other ACA-compliant plans, emergencies are covered anywhere. Routine and urgent care depends on the network; plans built on national PPO networks have in-network providers across the country.

Can commission-only reps get Marketplace subsidies?

Yes, if their expected net income for the year is under the 2027 line. Because commission income swings, update your estimate during the year.
