Independent and CAT adjusters work as 1099 contractors, often for months at a time in a state they do not live in, with pay that depends on the season. That combination breaks most health plans. Here is what works.
Independent adjusters are usually 1099 contractors paid per claim through an IA firm, so no one provides health insurance. During a catastrophe you may work 7 days a week for months in another state, where a home-state HMO or EPO covers only emergencies. Healthy adjusters should price a private plan on a nationwide PPO network next to full-price Marketplace coverage; adjusters with a slow year or a health condition should check the Marketplace and its tax credits.
Adjusters face a version of the trucker problem with a twist: the care you need on deployment often comes after long days in damaged areas, where clinics are busy and you will see whoever is open. A network that includes urgent care nationally is worth more than a slightly lower premium at home.
Adjuster income can swing widely from year to year. That matters twice for health insurance:
If you take a credit, update the Marketplace when a deployment changes your year. Our calculator shows where a given income lands.
Many adjusters carry a designated home state license from a state like Texas or Florida because their own state does not license adjusters, plus emergency or nonresident licenses for deployments. None of that decides where you buy health insurance. You buy it in the state where you actually live. Keep that address consistent on your tax return and your application.

Usually not. Most independent adjusters work as 1099 contractors, so they buy their own coverage.
On Marketplace and other ACA-compliant plans, emergencies are covered anywhere. Urgent care and routine visits depend on the network; many Marketplace HMOs and EPOs pay nothing outside their area, while plans on national PPO networks have in-network providers across the country.
Estimate expected net income for the year after business expenses, and update it when a deployment changes the picture. Starting with tax year 2026 there is no cap on repaying excess advance credit.
