Union lineworkers usually have health coverage through their local's plan. Non-union storm contractors, independent crews and 1099 storm workers often do not. Here is how to cover yourself when the job is wherever the lines went down.
If you are a union lineworker, your local's health and welfare plan is usually your coverage, and this page is not for you. If you work for a non-union contractor without benefits, run your own crew, or take storm work as a 1099 contractor, you buy your own. Healthy storm workers who spend weeks in other states should price a private plan on a nationwide PPO network next to full-price Marketplace coverage.
Storm restoration work moves fast. Crews roll from one state to the next as outages spread, sometimes for weeks. A plan built around your home county covers the emergency room anywhere, but not the clinic visit for the hand that will not heal or the follow-up after a fall.
Crew owners carry responsibilities the rest of the crew does not. W-2 employees generally need workers' compensation under your state's rules, and once you have at least one W-2 employee who is not your spouse, a small group plan or an ICHRA becomes possible. Helpers paid on a 1099 are not eligible for an employee plan.
Line work is one of the more dangerous trades. If you are a contractor without workers' compensation, an on-the-job injury can stop your income as well as cost money to treat. Health insurance covers treatment; disability insurance replaces income. If you run a crew with W-2 employees, workers' compensation and a group plan become your responsibility.
Self-employed and 1099 income is counted after expenses. Our free calculator shows which side of the 400% line you land on in about a minute, with results right away and no sign-up.
Union lineworkers usually have coverage through their local's plan. Non-union and independent storm workers often buy their own.
On ACA-compliant plans, emergencies are covered anywhere. Routine and urgent care depends on the network; national PPO networks cover care across the country.
Private medically underwritten plans are priced mainly on age, location, health and plan design. We go over everything an application asks on the call.
