You plan everyone's risk. Here is yours.

Advisors who go independent trade a wirehouse benefits package for higher payouts and their own book. Health insurance becomes a line on your own P&L. Most independent advisors are above the 2027 subsidy line, so the choice matters.

Independent means self-insured, at first

Quick answer

Registered reps affiliated with an independent broker-dealer and owners of independent RIAs typically buy their own coverage until they hire staff. Most are above the 2027 subsidy line, so Marketplace plans are full price. Healthy advisors usually compare a private plan on a nationwide PPO network; once you hire a W-2 employee who is not your spouse, small group, level-funded and ICHRA plans open up.

The transition from a wirehouse is the risky moment. Your old employer coverage ends, a 60-day special enrollment window opens, and your income for the year is hard to forecast while assets move. Lock in coverage before your last day.

The benefits checklist for leaving a wirehouse

Advisors moving to an independent broker-dealer or launching an RIA lose more than the health plan on their last day. Work through all of it before you resign:

  • Health: the 60-day special enrollment window opens when coverage ends; COBRA is the backstop.
  • Disability: group long-term disability ends with the job. Individual coverage is easier to get while your income history is clean.
  • Life: group life usually ends too. Ask about conversion or portability, and price term coverage.
  • HSA: an HSA you already have stays yours. New contributions need an HSA-eligible plan.
  • Dental and vision: easy to forget, and cheaper to buy before a known need than after.

From solo practice to a team

  • Solo: individual coverage, deducted through the self-employed health insurance deduction, or the 2% shareholder rules if you run an S corp. See S corp owners.
  • First hire: one W-2 employee who is not your spouse makes the practice eligible for a group plan.
  • Small team: ICHRA lets you set a fixed allowance per employee, which suits a practice that wants predictable costs. See our business plans.
The plain truth about private plans: the nationwide PPO plans we quote are private, medically underwritten plans, not Marketplace plans. A nationwide network means in-network doctors and hospitals in many states; it does not mean every service is covered. You answer health questions, and the carrier can decline you or exclude a condition. These plans are not ACA-compliant: depending on the plan, prescriptions, maternity, mental health and other benefits can be limited or left out, some benefits have dollar maximums, and out-of-network care costs more. We walk through exactly what a plan pays before you apply, and if a Marketplace plan fits you better, we tell you that too.

You already tell clients that disability is the risk most people underinsure. A book of business is only worth something if you can serve it, so price disability insurance alongside health.

Questions we hear most

Do independent financial advisors get health insurance?

Not usually from the broker-dealer. Independent reps and RIA owners generally buy their own coverage until they have employees.

Can an advisor practice offer a group plan?

Yes, once it has at least one W-2 employee who is not an owner or an owner's spouse.

What is the best health insurance for a high-income advisor?

For a healthy advisor over the subsidy line, a private plan on a nationwide PPO network is worth comparing with a full-price Marketplace plan; which one wins depends on price and on what each plan covers. Advisors with health conditions usually choose a Marketplace plan at full price.
