You left the firm. The firm's health plan stayed.

Going independent usually means better pay and no benefits department. Most consultants land above the 2027 subsidy line, which makes full-price Marketplace premiums a shock. Here is what healthy consultants usually buy instead.

What changes when you go independent

Quick answer

As an independent consultant you buy your own coverage. Most established consultants earn above the 2027 subsidy line, $63,840 single or $132,000 for a family of four, so Marketplace plans are full price. Healthy consultants who travel to clients should price a private plan on a nationwide PPO network next to full-price Marketplace coverage. Consultants with a health condition, or in a lean first year, should price the Marketplace too.

The first year is the tricky one. Leaving a firm opens a 60-day special enrollment window, but year-one income is hard to predict. A lean first year can put you under the line for a credit; a strong one can put you well over. Estimate honestly and update the Marketplace if the year changes.

Which lane fits which consultant

  • Healthy, over the line, travels to clients: a private plan on a nationwide PPO network is worth pricing next to the Marketplace.
  • Close to the line: half of self-employment tax and a SEP-IRA or solo 401(k) contribution may put you under. Run the calculator.
  • Has a condition or takes daily medication: a Marketplace plan, even at full price, is usually the safer choice.
  • Spouse has a good employer plan: that may be the cheapest answer, but check its network where you travel.
The plain truth about private plans: the nationwide PPO plans we quote are private, medically underwritten plans, not Marketplace plans. A nationwide network means in-network doctors and hospitals in many states; it does not mean every service is covered. You answer health questions, and the carrier can decline you or exclude a condition. These plans are not ACA-compliant: depending on the plan, prescriptions, maternity, mental health and other benefits can be limited or left out, some benefits have dollar maximums, and out-of-network care costs more. We walk through exactly what a plan pays before you apply, and if a Marketplace plan fits you better, we tell you that too.

Entities, employees and the deduction

As a sole proprietor or single-member LLC, you generally deduct premiums through the self-employed health insurance deduction, limited to net profit. If you elect S corporation status, the rules change; see S corp owner health insurance. Once you hire a W-2 employee who is not your spouse, small group plans, level-funded plans and ICHRA become options, and we handle those too through our business team.

Over or under the 2027 subsidy line?

Questions we hear most

What health insurance do independent consultants get?

They buy their own: a Marketplace plan, a private medically underwritten plan, or coverage through a spouse. Healthy consultants above the subsidy line often choose private plans on nationwide PPO networks.

Can a consultant deduct health insurance?

Generally yes, through the self-employed health insurance deduction, limited to net profit and not for months you were eligible for an employer-subsidized plan, including a spouse's.

Is leaving my firm a qualifying event?

Losing employer coverage is. You can pick a Marketplace plan up to 60 days before and after the coverage ends.
