The short version for Montana drivers

Quick answer

Montana drivers enroll on HealthCare.gov, Medicaid is expanded, and only a few carriers serve the state. Distances are measured in hours, so which hospitals a plan includes matters more here than the premium. Montana also has state continuation rules that matter for drivers leaving small carriers not covered by federal COBRA.

Hours between towns and a crossing into Canada

I-90 and I-94 run east to west across Montana, and I-15 heads north to the Sweetgrass crossing into Alberta. Freight is ag, energy, timber and long through-hauls. In much of the state the nearest full-service hospital is hours away, and winter makes every run longer.

Montana networks are built around a few regional systems in Billings, Missoula, Kalispell and Bozeman. A driver who runs North Dakota and Washington every week is outside that map most of the time.

Before you buy, search the plan's directory for the hospitals your family would use at home, such as Billings Clinic, Logan Health and Bozeman Health, and for urgent care along I-90, I-94 and I-15.

Few carriers, regional networks and state continuation

With a small number of carriers and networks organized around distant regional health systems, checking which hospitals a plan includes is the first step in Montana. Montana's expansion covers adults up to about 138% of the poverty line, and ranching and seasonal-income households should recheck eligibility each year.

Federal COBRA does not apply to employers with fewer than 20 employees, which describes many small Montana carriers. Montana law provides continuation options in some of those cases, so if you are leaving a small carrier, ask what state continuation applies before assuming you have nothing.

About private plans: a nationwide network means in-network providers in many states, not that every service is covered. These plans are medically underwritten and not ACA-compliant: you answer health questions, a carrier can decline you or exclude a condition, and prescriptions and other benefits can be limited or capped.

Three things Montana drivers should know

  • Leaving a small Montana carrier? Ask about state continuation coverage; federal COBRA may not apply.
  • Know the nearest in-network hospital to your home and your regular routes.
  • Cross-border drivers into Alberta should ask what, if anything, a plan pays in Canada.

What Montana drivers ask us

Did Montana expand Medicaid?

Yes, for adults up to about 138% of the poverty line.

Does COBRA apply if I leave a small Montana trucking company?

Federal COBRA generally applies only to employers with 20 or more employees. Montana law provides continuation in some circumstances for smaller employers, so ask.
