Open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1 to January 15 in most states. If you missed it, you are not stuck until next November. Here is what to check, in order.
Missing January 15 closes the Marketplace only for people with nothing new in their lives. A qualifying life event in the past 60 days reopens it. If you have none and your health is good, a private medically underwritten plan can be bought in any month. If neither applies, the next Marketplace window starts November 1, and the months until then are the ones to plan carefully.
Medically underwritten plans do not follow the open enrollment calendar. A healthy applicant can apply in any month, and coverage can start soon after approval. For self-employed people above the 2027 subsidy line, these plans can cost less than full-price Marketplace coverage, though they cover less in some areas. Many are built on nationwide PPO networks.
Then put November 1 on the calendar. Enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1. Our open enrollment dates by state lists every state we serve.
Self-employed and 1099 income is counted after expenses. Our free calculator shows which side of the 400% line you land on in about a minute, with results right away and no sign-up.

Common ones are losing other coverage, a permanent move with prior coverage, marriage, birth or adoption. Voluntarily dropping a plan does not count.
